Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) has undertaken a
US$35-million project to deal with the influx of passengers expected to pass
through South Africa’s airports for the World Cup in June next year. With up to
78 000 passengers and 260 international flights a day expected over that period
the improvements are focussed on improved check-in and self-service facilities
to handle check in efficiently and minimise delays to passengers on South Africa
football holidays.
The project will initially focus on the international airports in Johannesburg,
Durban and Cape Town and the local airport in Port Elizabeth. This development
will benefit tourists on South Africa football holidays in the short term
however its benefits will be one of the ongoing legacies of Football World Cup
for South African tourism.
The project has already yielded results with significant operational changes at
Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport and the new terminal at Cape Town
International Airport opening in November 2009.
