The deadline for the first
stage of ticket sales for the Football World Cup in
2010 passed on March 31, 2009. Organisers announced
that online submissions numbered over one million
for the 743,000 available tickets. Applications were
received from over 160 countries with South Africa,
the United Kingdom and the United States leading the rush for tickets.
Many football fans are planning football holidays
combining their passion for football with a unique
travel opportunity to explore the diversity South
Africa has to offer. With safaris, beaches and other
cultural destinations all within close reach of the
football venues the anticipation of the football
ticket allocation is high.
Tickets for matches where applications exceed the
supply will be drawn randomly on April 15 ensuring
all applications have an equal chance of winning.
Fans planning their football holidays for next year
will be advised of their success in securing tickets
by the end of April. A second phase of ticket sales
ending in November 2009 will sell remaining tickets
on a ‘first, come, first served’ basis.
Preparations are underway to complete the new
football stadiums and other infrastructure that will
support the influx of foreign visitors on football
holidays. Organisers are promising ‘an authentic
African showpiece that global football fans will
never forget’.
