Restored Mandela House Reopens
Published: 06/04/2009
The Mandela House Museum has
been reopened to the public recently after a R9
million restoration project completed by the Soweto
Heritage Trust.
In 1946 Mandela moved into the home at 8115 Vilakazi
Street, Orlando West and it was here that he retuned
after his release from prison in 1990. In his
autobiography ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ Mandela
describes the return to this humble three room home
as ‘…only then that I knew in my heart that I had
left prison’.
As a top sight for travellers on South Africa
culture holidays, thousands of foreign and local visitors have made
the pilgrimage to the home which contains original
furniture and memorabilia documenting the time
Mandela lived here. The area also contains many
other sights of cultural and historical
significance.
Travellers and locals alike are following in the
footsteps of the icon of South Africa. A South
Africa culture holiday along the Nelson Mandela
Route includes stops at Robben Island, Mandela’s
childhood home in the village of Qunu and several
museums recalling his life story along the way.
