Two Oceans Marathon Turns 40
Published: 10/04/2009
Runners will take to the streets on Easter Saturday April
11, 2009 for the 40th birthday of the Two Oceans marathon. A road race taking in the physical
challenge and breathtaking scenery of Chapman’s Peak is described as the
‘world’s most beautiful marathon’.
Rising from modest roots with an initial line up of 26 runners in 1970, this
year’s race nearly 19,000 entrants have registered to participate. Almost one
third will take part in the 56 kilometer ultra marathon, including a large
number of last year’s top 10 finalists, with the remaining entrants registered
for the 21km half marathon and shorter fun runs. Over 4.5% of participants are
athletes from abroad including the United Kingdom, Germany and the United States
for a South Africa marathon holiday experience of a lifetime.
Festivities over the Easter weekend makes this a great South Africa marathon
holiday opportunity for runners and spectators. Events scheduled around Cape
Town include a comedy festival, fun runs, concerts in Kirstenbosch Gardens and
other family focused activities.
