Namibia-South Africa Rescue Saves Penguins
Published: 01/05/2009
South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal
Birds (SANCCOB) and Namibian volunteers joined forces to save 129 African
penguins caught in an oil slick off the coast of Luderitz, Namibia. The oil
slick emerged in mid April and its source is unknown. The penguins were
transported for 19 hours to SANCCOB’s rehabilitation center in Cape Town where
they have been responding well to treatment, hydration and feeding.
African penguins are listed as ‘vulnerable to extinction’ with population
numbers dwindling to approximately 27,000 breeding pairs. The penguins live in
24 colonies between Namibia and Algoa Bay near Port Elizabeth, South Africa and
are a highlight for many tourists on South Africa and Namibia holidays. The
penguin’s popularity has contributed to the success of the conservation efforts
of SANCCOB and other environmental groups.
SANCCOB is appealing to the general public to ‘adopt’ a penguin to contribute
towards the rehabilitation costs of the birds.
