New National Park Declared on Garden Route
Published: 05/05/2009
The newly declared Garden Route National Park will
‘conserve the area’s natural heritage’ with over 121,000 hectares of protected
land. The national park will be bound by the Tsitsikamma National Park to the
east and the Wilderness National Park to the west including the Knysna Lakes and
other land managed by South Africa National Parks. Nearly half the area is newly
proclaimed land in line with South Africa’s strategy to expand the area under
natural protection to between 6% and 8% of the countries total land area.
The environmental strategy also provides a boost to tourism as nature based
holidays become increasingly popular and Garden Route holidays are the third
most visited tourist destination in South Africa. Garden Route holidays, enjoyed
by both domestic and international tourists, combines game viewing and numerous
adventure activities including hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, snorkelling,
diving and fishing.
