The recent Knysna Oyster Festival was deemed a ‘huge
success’ by festival organisers with over 200,000 oysters consumed during the 10
day event. A key tourist destination for Garden Route holidays, Knysna was the
perfect spot to celebrate the fruits of the ocean with a lavish festival
dedicated to the oyster. Festival Manager Nicci Rousseau-Schmidt announced that
the festival held from 3 July to 12 July 2009 experienced the highest attendance
in 26 years. Rousseau-Schmidt commented that “numbers were up for all events
this year despite our concerns about the effects of the global economic
recession”.
Festival goers, both local and international visitors on Garden Route holidays,
enjoyed a number of oyster focussed events including the popular oyster-shucking
(opening) competition, the ever-popular oyster eating competition and a Mardi
Gras style evening of oysters and wine tasting.
While enjoying the gastronomic delights of the festival, participants also
raised money for charity. Festival organisers hope to beat last year’s amount
raised of R1,16m which Rousseau-Schmidt anticipated due to the increase in
participants numbers at this event.
