South Africa is recognising the growing tourist market of
overland visitors from neighbouring Southern African Development Community (SADC)
countries and the significant contribution these visitors are making to the
South African economy. Over 75% of all visitors to South Africa come from
Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe
to shop, visit friends and generally on South Africa holidays. SADC visitors
numbered more than 7 million in 2008 representing tourist spending of over
R43-billion.
South African Tourism's ongoing Welcome campaign was launched in 2005 to promote
South Africans as good hosts to overseas visitors with a focus on building
strong, friendly relationships with travellers on South African holidays.
Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk reiterated the importance of this
campaign to encourage “repeat travellers originating from neighbouring Southern
African Development Community (SADC) countries”. This relationship starts with
the service visitors receive at border posts particularly those crossing into
South Africa overland from neighbouring countries.
