Passengers have declared Johannesburg’s new Bus Rapid
Transit (BRT) service a success for connecting them with destinations across the
city. After only 39 days of operation into the Rea Vaya project manager, Jacques
van Zijl confirmed that the new transportation system is servicing over 12 000
passengers a day. Many of these are commuters who have seen their journey time
cut considerably but there are also many casual riders and even a few tourists
on Johannesburg holidays transiting the city.
The operation of the new fast and efficient bus transport system is receiving
good reports for its first class buses, convenient service and high tech safety
features. There have however been some issues with sticking to timetables and
BRT bus lanes not complete in some areas. To address the first issue the BRT
drivers, who were formerly taxi drivers are undergoing additional training.
The BRT also offer services to and from Orlando and Ellis Park stadiums on an
events basis that will make attending events easier for locals and travellers on
Johannesburg holidays. The next phase of the project will focus on bringing in
feeder bus services and other complementary forms of transport in time for the
World Cup in June 2009.
