Ten more South African beaches have been awarded Blue Flag
status bring the total to 29. The announcement made last week by Tourism
Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk is good news for tourism as South Africa beach
holidays are extremely popular with domestic and foreign tourists alike. Van
Schalkwyk commented that "South Africa's Blue Flag beaches increase our
desirability and reputation as a world class destination".
South Africa started participating in the Blue Flag campaign in 2001 as the
first country outside Europe to take part in the award scheme. Blue Flag is a
voluntary scheme that acts as a guarantee for visitors on South Africa beach
holidays of the quality of the best beaches in the world. This award is based on
14 criteria including water cleanliness, visitor safety, amenities and
environmental standards.
The 10 South African beaches which have recently been awarded Blue Flag status
are:

Yzerfontein Main beach, Yzerfontein;

Big Bay beach, Bloubergstrand Cape Town;

Santosbeach, Mossel Bay;

Hartenbos beach, Mossel Bay;

Robberg 5 beach, Plettenberg Bay;

Kariega Main beach, Kenton-on-Sea;

Boknes beach, Kenton-On-Sea;

Trafalgar beach, KwaZulu-Natal South Coast;

Alkantstrand, Richard's Bay.
