Cyclists from around the world are gearing up to
participate in Johannesburg's 13th Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge on 15 November
2009. The race is billed as the world's second-biggest individually timed
mass-participation cycle race with over 23 000 cyclists already registered. This
year sees an increasing number of professional teams entering the race which
attracts the elite from the international cycling circuit. The winners of last
years men’s and women’s races - Malcolm Lange and Anriette Schoeman – will be
defending their titles.
Professional cyclists will compete in 180km race while amateurs and beginners
will participate in the 94.7km circuit. The biggest change in this year’s race
is the route of the 94.7km inner city route which will take in some of
Johannesburg’s iconic sights including the Nelson Mandela Bridge and the newly
renovated Ellis Park stadium.
The Cycle Challenge attracts professionals participant, cycling enthusiasts on
South Africa cycling holidays and spectators who line the streets along the
route. Ravi Naidoo, the 94.7 Highveld Stereo station manager describes that
Cycle Challenge as “a day that celebrates Joburg and its people".
The Cycle Challenge also benefits local communities by supporting various social
responsibility projects and creating jobs relating to holding the cycling event.
