The final 2 000 Comrades Marathon tickets were sold out
within minutes of being made available on Sunday, 30 January. The runners lining
up for the 85th Comrades Marathon will number about 23,000. This is the last
opportunity to enter the anniversary race which will be a ‘down run’ from
Pietermaritzburg to Durban in order to accommodate the number of participants
crossing the finish line at the Sahara Stadium Kingsmead. Comrades Marathon
Association (CMA) CEO Gary Boshoff commented that "this is a fantastic
achievement ... and illustrates the extent to which the Comrades has captured
the imagination of South African and international distance runners alike”.
Overseas entrants often combine the race with leisure for a South Africa
marathon holiday experience.
More than 15 000 entries were received from previous Comrades participants with
a further 5,000 new entrants joined the field of runners aiming to complete the
89.17-kilometre distance within the 12-hour time limit. The final number of
runners will be announced in late February once the last minute applications
have been processed. The final figure is expected to fall slightly short of the
23 961 runners who took part in the 75th anniversary of the race run in 2000
which made it the world's largest ultra-marathon.
