Johannesburg's Newtown cultural festival will rock the
city during the 2010 World Cup with a month’s worth of music, dance, theatre,
poetry, literature, film, photography and other visual art offerings. The
festival is part of the Newtown Management District's marketing plans the
regeneration of the area using funds from the 2010 Lotteries Board programme to
boost Johannesburg as a centre of arts and culture. "The Lotto funding will be
used to create an atmosphere in the precinct that is fresh, energetic, creative
and uniquely South African." explains Kate Shand, marketing manager for the
Newtown Management District making Newtown a focal point for non-football
related activities for fans on Johannesburg holidays during the World Cup.
The Newtown district, located in the heart of the city and accessible across the
Nelson Mandela Bridge, is a cultural hotspot of theatres, art galleries,
restaurants, museums, dance studios, craft markets, nightclubs and jazz spots.
According to Shand, the Newtown 2010 Festival will take place within the formal
infrastructure of the area but will also take to the streets with an open stage
where free performances will be offered. The festival aims to give back to the
city's more deprived communities by supporting local contemporary and
traditional performers including buskers taking to the stage in key spots
throughout Newtown.
