Salta & San Salvadore de Jujuy

In the north, on the border with Bolivia, the diverse mountainous landscape around the cities of Salta, San Salvadore de Jujuy and Cafayate are truly awe-inspiring. One of the main attractions is the magnificent Humahuaca Gorge and there are also jungle, vineyards, high altitude desert and cloud forest, all available to explore by the many local tours or self-drive hire car.

The famous narrow gauge Train to the Clouds ascends the multi-coloured Quebrada del Toro, a fabulous journey through dense forest and brightly coloured canyons. This wonderful experience is also available by minibus tour or hire car.

Salta is slightly off the beaten track and the area retains a timeless Spanish colonial atmosphere, which is reflected in the many excellent museums and folk music clubs. It is dominated by the Andes and you will see llamas, indigenous communities and Inca ruins.

Although San Salvadore de Jujuy has none of the gentle sophistication of Salta, it is the most indigenous of Argentinean cities and was prominent in the wars of independence with Spain, which invaded repeatedly from nearby Bolivia. There is an urban urgency and buzz here, with reputedly the best nightlife in the country, together with a thriving art, music and restaurant scene.

The tranquil town of Cafayate in the south of the region is set amongst spectacular mountain backed vineyards. This is Argentina’s second wine centre, after Mendoza, specialising in making dry white wine made from the torrontes grape. High quality classic reds are also produced here.

Bolivia is only a few hours drive away and its culture, music and crafts are also evident in this spectacular and multi-faceted corner of Argentina.
