The Pantanal Wetlands is a real highlight of Brazil and a must-see for any wildlife lover - it’s twenty times as large as the Everglades in Florida. A beautiful, expansive area of blue and green flooded forest and marshlands, it splits into the northern and southern regions. The Pantanal also extends into Bolivia to the west and the Gran Chaco region of Paraguay to the south. The abundance and array of wildlife here is aptly demonstrated by the recent BBC series with David Attenborough that solely focused on the Pantanal.
The area is renowned for its bird and wildlife and is home to the endangered hyacinth macaw, capybaras, caiman, anacondas, marsh deer, giant river otters and various monkeys. The elusive jaguar lives in the far north of the Pantanal and whilst hard to spot there is a healthy population here. The best time to visit is in our summer months (May to September) when the stifling high temperatures have dropped and the water levels are lower which makes it easier to spot wildlife.
