Located in the north of the country, the Arenal National Park is part of a larger conservation area that protects 16 reserves. The Arenal volcano has an almost perfect cone shape and until a few years ago was Costa Rica’s most active volcano, emitting a constant trickle of red-hot lava and billowing out ash. Since 2010 Arenal has stopped erupting and the volcano peak can be shrouded in cloud, especially in the dry season, but it’s a stunning sight when the weather clears.
This area of lush cloud forest offers a huge range of outdoor activities at many different levels to suit all age groups and degrees of challenge. The sky tram, the 8-stage zip-line and hiking trails through the cloud forest and across the hanging bridges are well organised and reassuringly safety conscious. These activities help to make Arenal holidays immense fun and let you experience the forest at ground level and then high above the tree canopy. The views of picturesque Lake Arenal and the volcanic slopes are spectacular. Nearby you can also go white water rafting and horse riding.
