The bird count at 400 species reaches new heights in the Cloud Forest Reserve near Monteverde - another birder’s paradise. There are also 120 mammals and 1200 reptiles and amphibians – not to mention the multiplicity of insects. This is also one of the very few places that support all six species of the cat family: jaguars, ocelots, pumas, oncillas, margays, and jaguarundis.
It is located in the central highlands near Arenaland on the Continental Divide and on a clear day you can see both the Pacific and Caribbean Coast. The primary cloud forests here and at nearby Santa Helena, which boasts the same staggering biodiversity, are among Costa Rica’s most visited and magical attractions.
As with all cloud forests their unique moisture driven eco-systems and endemic species thrive abundantly in habitats not found anywhere else on earth. There are butterfly farms, insect museums, canopy walks and many examples of ecotourism, often organised by the local inhabitants. Hike the twelve miles of paths and engage close up and personal with this astounding array of tropical wildlife. These incredible forests are an absolute must-see on your holiday to Costa Rica.
