Tren Crucero, Guayaquil & Pacific Coast

With nearly 3 million people, Guayaquil is the largest city in Ecuador and the gateway to the Galapagos Islands. It is linked to Quito by the wonderful Tren Crucero train and is the country’s main port. With its tropical climate and waterside buzz, it is justly known as the ‘Pearl of the Pacific'.

On Guayaquil holidays this rejuvenated city has an enormous number of attractions to offer and one of the very best is the Malecon Simon Bolivar (Malecon means esplanade). This one and a half mile waterfront walk has everything. There are sports, restaurants, entertainment, science, history and art and fine gardens showing off the best of Ecuador’s coastal plants. Also museums, galleries and spectacular monuments to the country’s heroes and artists, as well as the old market, built in 1907 by Gustave Eiffel of Eiffel Tower fame. This is a fabulous, redeveloped mini-city of eight square miles.

The many museums elsewhere in the city are dedicated to a vast range of subjects and a favourite on Guayaquil holidays is the Casa de la Cultura, or House of Culture. It houses the most valuable collection of pre-Inca indigenous gold work in Ecuador, with snake-shaped bracelets, ceremonial masks, earrings and nose pins and much more.

On Guayaquil holidays you have to visit the Piazza Lagos. This stylish complex of restaurants, wine bars and outdoor cafes, spread amongst palm trees and fountains, is the perfect spot after a day’s hard sightseeing.  On the city outskirts the brilliant Parque Historical Guayaquil will amaze you with its variety. It is enormous and part zoo for endangered wildlife, part showcase for the 20th century development of this fascinating city and part repository for local traditions and crafts.

A wonderful way to travelling from Quito to Guayaquil is on the newly restored Tren Crucero train. This journey takes 4 days, travelling through the breathtaking scenery of the Avenue of the Volcanoes to Riobamba, Alausi and the famous Devil’s Nose, staying at haciendas along the way. A spectacular feat of Victorian engineering, the Tren Crucero train uses a complicated series of switch-backs at the Devil’s Nose, to negotiate the steep hill face.

Guayaquil is in the process of re-inventing itself and it is a work in progress that will surprise you, whether you get there on the Tren Crucero train, by road or by air.

From Guayaquil, the Pacific coast extends northwards for some 400 miles to Esmaraldes, near the Columbian border. These wide, fertile alluvial plains were first settled over 5,000 years ago by some of the oldest civilisations on the continent and have been a centre of agriculture ever since.

Start at Salinas to the west of Guayaquil, named after the salt extracted here and the city’s favourite seaside resort. There is a small but comprehensive Naval Archaeological Museum displaying marvellous antique sea-going balsa boats. The outstanding museum of the Lovers of Sumpa is nearby, named after the 5,000 year old skeletons of a man and woman buried lovingly together. This is definitely one for the romantics among you on holidays to Guayaquil.

Further north the coast is less developed and fewer tourists make the road trip up to Puerto Lopez, from where day boats leave to reach Isla de la Plata. This untouched island is often described as the ‘Poor Man’s Galapagos’ as Blue-footed boobies, albatross and frigate birds can all be seen here in season.

This coast is also one of the world’s best whale-watching locations, with humpback whales travelling from Antarctica between June and October to mate and give birth around Machalilla National Park.
