Cusco Holidays

Cusco in southern Peru is the old Inca capital and is still the jewel in the Peruvian crown. Now a World Heritage Site, it was developed by the Inca warrior king Pachacuteq during the 15thcentury. Before that, it was a centre of pre-Inca civilisation for 3,000 years. A stay here is an absolute must for any visit to Peru, as holidays in Cusco offer a multitude of amazing experiences, both in and outside the city.

The Spanish built on top of the old Inca structures, so you can literally see the city’s layers of history and culture. The Inca were master builders and their beautifully fitted and polished stonework can be seen in the Plaza des Armas, the main square, and along the pretty cobbled streets which surround it. The Inca built without mortar and their astonishing craftsmanship remains earthquake-proof, which is more than can be said for the Spanish superstructures, many of which have had to be rebuilt.

Cusco is noted for its indigenous population and dress and the native Quechua language, which are all very evident in the narrow sloping streets and the squares. There are plenty of street hawkers but these people are gentle and during your holiday in Cusco you will not be harassed.

Among the must-see sites on holidays to Cusco are the massive cathedral, built by the Spanish and the magnificent Temple of the Sun, once the most important in the Inca empire. The cathedral was built over the Inca palace of Wiracocha and completed in 1664, a hundred years after it was ordered. The building is huge and very ornamental, with astonishing quantities of gold and silver. Here you can see the fusion of the two religious cultures. The most famous example is the painting of The Last Supper, by indigenous artist Zapata, who managed, against strict Spanish rules, to incorporate the traditional Peruvian meal of guinea pig and the local drink chicha!

ALL OUR HOLIDAYS ARE FINANCIALLY PROTECTED wherever in the world you live.
Qurikancha, the Temple of the Sun, was once completely lined with solid gold, which had only decorative value to the Incas. It was also demolished and the Church of Santa Domingo built over it. However, the stunning design and stonework of the lower levels remain, as well as a major archaeological museum housing Inca mummies and textiles from the site – well worth visiting on holidays to Cusco.

Elsewhere in the city you will find museums and shops demonstrating and selling the traditional, beautiful weaving from alpaca wool, a staple cottage industry for centuries past. There are dozens of coffee shops, especially around the Plaza del Franscisco and the vibrant, colourful and genuine Peruvian market of San Pedro is another must for your holiday to Cusco. There are over 7,000 varieties of potato and Peru is home to 3000! In the Papa Museo, the potato museum, you will learn all you ever wanted to know about potato cultivation and usage, but were afraid to ask.

The Inca mummified their dead and you can see three superbly preserved examples in the small but fascinating Museo del Sitio, with its pre-Columbian ceramics and textiles fragments (pre-Columbian is the time before the arrival of Italian Christopher Columbus in 1492).

On holidays to Cusco, look out too for the museums showing the pre-Inca period. The Incas rightly receive a lot of attention, but they were in the ascendancy for a relatively short period and there is a fascinating history of Peruvian tribes and cultures going back two and three thousand years. You will enjoy checking it out.

Cusco is a beautiful and fascinating historical city and the list goes on and on. However at 3,400 metres the air is a little thin, so take things easier than normal. Acclimatise and watch out for altitude sickness. Don’t leave Peru without trying coca tea or chewing the leaves. This is the traditional antidote to altitude sickness and a great pick-me–up in the morning, which most hotels offer free of charge all day.
