When to go to Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has a warm subtropical climate and can be visited all year round, as the east and west coasts have opposite seasons.
 
The best time to visit Sri Lanka therefore depends on which side of the island you want to visit.
 
November to March is the best time to visit the south and west coasts, including Yala National Park which is closed in September and early October.
 
This is also the best time for whale watching along the south coast and for birding, as this is when the migrants visit.
 
The best time to visit the beaches of Pasikudu and Trincomalee on the east coast is May to September.
 
The Minneriya Elephant Gathering occurs in July and August.
