The Lewa Marathon in Kenya takes place in a stunning wildlife conservancy north of Mount Kenya in June, giving you the opportunity to run surrounded by big game. This is a tough marathon, as it combines high altitude running (5,500 ft/1,700 m) on rough terrain, with the equatorial sun. Our safari packages include flights, hotels & a choice of Mombasa beach resort, but you must enter the race yourself.

Day 1
You will be met at Nairobi Airport by your guide and transferred 4-hours through coffee plantations and small farms to the highlands of Mount Kenya, travelling in a safari jeep (with pop-up roof for game viewing).

Located just south of the equator, magnificent Mount Kenya is an extinct shield volcano and the highest mountain in Kenya, and second only to Kilimanjaro in Africa. Mount Kenya National Park has been declared a World Heritage site because of its sensitive flora and fauna. Check into your hotel and relax in this beautiful region.
Day 2
Today is free to relax at your lodge situated in the foothills of Mount Kenya and enjoy the wildlife and birds that visit the waterhole.

According to local Kikuyu custom, Mount Kenya is the home of Ngai (the supreme being - or creator God).
Day 3
Today travel 1-hour to register for the Kenya Run Wild Marathon or half marathon..

Your driver will assist you in collecting your race number, provide transport to familiarise you with the route and discuss any logistical support you may require on race day.

The rest of the day is free for you to relax at your lodge and further acclimatise.
Day 4
Rise early today for your transfer to the start of the high altitude Kenya Wildlife Marathon, which raises funds for conservation and community development.

This tough marathon is run on rough 4x4 tracks through the Lewa Downs Wildlife Consevancy, which is home to a variety of wildlife, including all the Big Five - lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo. It is also home to endangered cheetah and Grevy's zebra.

The average elevation of the course is 5,500 feet (1,700 m) above sea level. As Lewa Downs is situated close to the equator, the combination of equatorial sun and high altitude can test even the most seasoned runner - but completing this marathon will be one of your greatest running achievements.
Day 5
Today we drive 1-hour to the rolling plains of the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, crossing the equator at Nanyuki.

After lunch at your lodge, enjoy a game drive in this wonderful wildlife conservation region.

In the evening enjoy an exciting night drive to view nocturnal animals by spotlight.
Day 6
Today enjoy morning and afternoon shared game drives in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

This 90,000 acre private game reserve is situated on the equator, between the foothills of the Aberdares range and beautiful Mount Kenya. It was wildlife reserve was originally established to protect and breed the endangered northern white rhino and it is also home to several other rare species, including the besia oryx and the reticulated giraffe. Big Five game viewing here is excellent, with possible sightings of wild dogs in large packs. Its open savanna grasslands are also home to zebra, eland, waterbuck, Grant's gazelle, Thompson's gazelle, elephant, buffalo, cheetah, lion, silver-backed jackals, ostrich, hartebeest and baboon. There are also several hundred bird species present.
