If you love running and wildlife, you should participate in one of the great marathons in Africa where you will be surrounded by exceptional scenery and some of the finest game parks in the world. Hot climatic conditions, combined rough terrain, make races in Africa tough - so focus on enjoying the experience, rather than trying to achieve a personal best. An added bonus is that many marathons in Africa are associated with excellent charitable causes.
You will need to arrange your own race entry, but we can look after all your flights, transfers, accommodation & safari packages, as well as all race day logistics. Afterwards you can enjoy an optional safari or beach extension.
Southern Africa
The Comrades Marathon in South Africa is one of the world's most famous ultra marathons (82 km), run in June between Durban & Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu Natal, with the direction changing each year. Afterwards you can enjoy a malaria free safari at Nambiti Game Reserve, before relaxing on the warm Durban North Coast.
The Two Oceans Cape Town is another iconic South African ultra marathon (56 km). It is held over the Easter weekend around the spectacular Cape Peninsula, one of the most beautiful marathon routes in the world. Afterwards you can relax in Cape Town, enjoy Big Five safari packages or explore the scenic Garden Route.
The Cape Town Marathon is held in South Africa in late September / early October. The route takes in the natural beauty of Table Mountain and the ocean, as well as many of the attractions of this beautiful city. Afterwards you can self-drive along the Garden Route.
The Victoria Falls Marathon runs across the famous iron bridge that connects Zimbabwe and Zambia in July, with magnificent views of the iconic falls. You will run through a World Heritage Site where you may see wildlife such as elephants & buffalo. Afterwards you can enjoy a safari in Hwange in Zimbabwe, South Luangwa in Zambia, Chobe or the Okavango Delta in Botswana.
East Africa
The Nairobi Marathon is held every November and attracts runners from around the world. Here you can run alongside aspiring talent, with some of East Africa's best athletes taking part. The race is run at altitude (5,889 ft/1,795 m). Afterwards you can enjoy one of our safari packages on the open plains of the famous Masai Mara Game Reserve, before relaxing on the gorgeous Indian Ocean beaches of the Mombasa Coast, or on the spice island of Zanzibar.
The Lewa Marathon takes place in a stunning wildlife conservancy north of Mount Kenya in June, giving you the opportunity to run surrounded by big game (5,500 ft/1,700 m). Afterwards enjoy a Big Five safari in Ol Pejeta Conservancy, which is near the Sweetwaters Chimp Sanctuary, with optional beach extension.
The Kilimanjaro Marathon is another iconic East African race that is run from Moshi in Tanzania in late February/early March (3,120 ft/950 m), in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. After your run you can enjoy a magnificent Big Five safari on the endless plains of the Serengeti, followed by time relaxing on the white sandy beaches of Zanzibar island, which are lapped by warm turquoise waters.
The Uganda Marathon comes as a 6-night package that includes staying in the small village of Masaka, southwest of Kampala, with few days of volunteering in the community before the race, which takes place in June. If you book this direct with the organisers, we can arrange all your post-race touring e.g chimp & gorilla trekking, white water rafting on the Nile, or a safari to Murchison Falls National Park.
