Located in the west of Panama, this spectacular region of alpine mountains and tropical beaches is known as The Land of Flowers and Eternal Spring. The highlands are covered with rainforest, volcanic peaks, orchid and dairy farms, coffee plantations and cattle ranches. David is the regional capital and the second largest city in the country, after Panama City. It is a busy prosperous transportation hub and an excellent base for exploring the highlands or for your onward journey.
The real jewel of the region is Boquete, a mountain town located at 975 metres and ideal for hiking, bird watching and adventure activities. From this delightful hideaway you can enjoy eco-tours, river rafting and kayaking, canopy zip-lining or simply walking and soaking up the delightful scenery. The essential trip here is the famous and popular Quetzals Trail to nearby Cerro Punto, in search of this colourful and exotic bird. This fantastic six mile rainforest hike rises to 2500 metres and passes close by the highest peak in Panama, the 3500 metre high Baru Volcano.
