Uruguay is one of South America’s smallest countries but is a high-income nation that prides itself on its exceptional levels of equality. The Economist named it country of the year in 2013. The infrastructure is excellent with Internet speeds to match anything in Europe, great medical care and excellent city public transport.
However, Uruguay holidays are all about taking life at a slower pace, and many travellers choose to come here from Argentina for a few days relaxation on the beach. There are over 3,500 miles of sandy coastline and some delightful colonial towns to explore.
The easiest way to get to Uruguay from Argentina is by ferry across the River Plate from Buenos Aires to Montevideo, which takes a couple of hours. There is much to see and do in the capital but the interior of the country is exceptionally scenic and well worth including in most Uruguay holidays if your schedule permits. Self-driving is a relaxing way to get around and we recommend spending some time on a country estancia where you can explore on horse back and enjoy the lifestyle of a traditional gaucho.
Montevideo itself is a cosmopolitan mix of attractive modern development and a rich cultural history. The city is packed with museums, art galleries and theatres as well as upmarket shopping malls, stylish beach developments and top quality restaurants. To the west on the capital along the coast, the town of Colonia del Sacramento is a World Heritage Site and colonial gem, with cobbled streets and well-preserved Portuguese and Spanish architecture. It is set around a sleepy harbour and is also served by ferries from Buenos Aires. Nearby Carmelo is another delightful colonial town and is the ideal base from which to experience Uruguay’s vineyards.
