Uruguay holidays - view of Punta del Este marina

Uruguay Holidays

Uruguay’s chic coastal resorts, colonial cities and laid-back ranch life, along with its liberal easy-going culture, make it an attractive holiday destination in its own right.

Uruguay is one of South America’s smallest countries but it is a high-income nation that prides itself on its exceptional levels of equality. In recent times it was named ‘country of the year ‘ by the Economist so no surprise that the infrastructure is excellent with great medical care and first-rate city public transport. That said, Uruguay holidays are all about taking life at a slower pace. Many travellers hop over from Argentina to relax on the sandy beaches and explore its picturesque colonial towns.

The easiest way to get to Uruguay from Argentina is by ferry across the River Plate from Buenos Aires to Montevideo, which takes a couple of hours. There is much to see and do in the capital but the interior of the country is exceptionally scenic and well worth visiting if your schedule permits. Self-driving is a relaxing way to get around and we recommend spending some time on a country estancia in Cuchilla Grande where you can explore on horse back and enjoy the lifestyle of a traditional gaucho.

Montevideo itself is a cosmopolitan mix of attractive modern development and a rich cultural history. Half of the 3.3 million population live here. The city is packed with museums, art galleries and theatres as well as upmarket shopping malls, stylish beach developments and top quality restaurants. At the heart of this cosmopolitan city the historic Plaza Independencia separates downtown from the Ciudad Vieja. The picturesque old town is with well preserved with both colonial and art deco architecture.

One of the finest attractions in Montevideo, the National History Museum, is housed in five historical buildings in the old city. The history of this exceptional country is on display here and it is not to be missed. MAPI, the Museum of Pre-Columbian Indigenous Art is another must-see for lovers of local history and ancient culture and the Mercado del Puerto is the place to try traditional grilled meat and a wine cocktail on Uruguay holidays.

Just over 100 miles to the west of Montevideo, Colonia del Sacramento is a World Heritage Site and colonial gem, with cobbled streets and well-preserved architecture. The oldest town in Uruguay, Colonia was founded by the Portuguese in 1610 and the Spanish finally took control in 1777. It is set around a sleepy harbour and is also served by ferries from Buenos Aires, just 45 minutes away.

At its beautiful heart is the Barrio Historico, with its preserved buildings from the Portuguese settlement, fused with the later Spanish architecture - and incredible world famous sunsets. Just find a seat and a drink at dusk and watch the show! The Barrio is surrounded on three sides by water, which only enhances its unique, relaxed atmosphere. Nearby Carmelo is another delightful colonial town and is the ideal base from which to explore Uruguay’s vineyards.

For sun seekers, Punta del Este on the southern tip of Uruguay is the country’s best-known beach resort. Located 87 miles east of Montevideo and branded the ‘St Tropez of South America’ this is a hang out for the rich and famous from Uruguay and Argentina, complete with yacht marina, luxury hotels and huge mansions.

For something a little more laid-back, Jose Ignacio offers visitors a more peaceful beach experience. While this is no longer a quiet fishing port, it is still a charming place to kick back and enjoy beach life, good food and the chic boutique hotels. It still retains its bohemian feel with dirt roads and hand painted road signs. For a terrific view of the area, climb to the top of the 45-metre high lighthouse.

This is a small country with a big heart, so wherever you go on your Uruguay holidays, take your time and enjoy the welcome.
