Mexico boasts exceptional cuisine and nowhere is this more evident than in the huge, vibrant and diverse capital, Mexico City. Sheer industrial, cultural and artistic energy is driving the city’s progress towards world beating status. Every town in Mexico has a main square called a Zócalo, and Mexico City’s is surrounded by a stunning blend of architecture representing its fascinating history. You will be surprised by the elegance and cultural depth of this great city on holidays to Mexico.

It is surrounded by an area known as the Colonial Highlands, named because of the elevation and the multiplicity of Hispanic towns and villages, many of which can be reached by excursion from the centre. Here you can see for yourself what "New Spain" looked and felt like in a wide range of beautifully preserved buildings, museums, cathedrals and churches. They are waiting for you to stroll and enjoy the history and charm of this centre of colonial and revolutionary Mexico.

The south of the country is steeped in Mesoamerican history and it is nowhere better experienced than in Oaxaca, in the shadow of the Sierra Madre. The area has been inhabited for 3,500 years, culminating with the Aztecs and the Spanish, and it shows. You can enjoy a treasure trove of pyramids, temples, tombs and urban dwellings, as well as exuberant festivals and great food. Here, Mexican cuisine surpasses itself and you will find some of the best food in the country.

Move east to Chiapas, Mexico’s southern- most state, with the country’s highest concentration of indigenous people. In San Cristobel de las Casas, the state’s cultural centre, they are superbly represented in the local museums dedicated to showcasing their customs and traditions. Or see magnificent Palenque, with the most complete Mayan ruins and art in Mexico.

Now go north east to the Yucatan peninsula, with its great Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza. With the remains at Uxmal, its near neighbour, you can see the most important Mayan legacy in all of Mexico. If you want to combine culture with the beach on your Mexico holiday, the Riviera Maya, Cancun and the off- shore islands on the Caribbean offer all that you could wish for.

At some point on your holiday to Mexico you may want to experience the Copper Canyon and its extraordinary railway, El Chepe. Situated in the north at Chihuahua, this is a stunning complex of six copper coloured canyons, which together surpass America’s Grand Canyon in size. El Chepe is the railway which runs 400 miles through dozens of tunnels and bridges up to 2,500 metres high. The western half of the journey, from Creel to Los Mochis on the coast, runs along the side of the canyon and is one of the world’s most scenic rail trips.

Not too far away is Baja California, the long peninsula across the Gulf of California (also called the Sea of Cortez). Here you will see jungle, desert, whales, cave paintings - and one of the liveliest and most popular beach resorts in the Americas: Los Cabos, an all-year, all-inclusive beach paradise.
