Santiago has changed. Situated in Chile’s Central Valley it is still the country’s largest city and very much the capital, but it has been modernised, with new museums, parks, galleries, theatres, shopping centres and hotels. It’s no longer simply a stopping off point for the many Chilean attractions elsewhere, but a superb holiday destination in its own right. The new Centro Gabriela Mistral cultural centre, named after Latin America’s first woman winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, is a brilliant example of the city’s rejuvenation, complete with an amazing multi-coloured glass roof.
Among the many traditional bars and cafes, on Cerro San Cristóbal (San Cristóbal Hill) you will find the Museo Chileno de Arte Pre-Columbian, the best museum in the country to specialise in pre- Colombian culture. You can check out Santiago’s downtown core with its colonial architecture, the famous fish market and restaurants in the Mercado Central and the Buin Zoo. The Barrio Lastarria, the Bohemian Quarter, is another must-see on a Santiago holiday. They are all easily accessible either exploring on your own or taking a guided walking tour of the city centre. And wherever you go, the magnificent Andes Mountains will always be part of the view.
