At more than 42 million acres, the flooded Pantanal Wetlands is the premier safari destination for Brazil wildlife holidays & vacations, as this is the best place in the country to view large mammals and participate in jaguar tours. Split into a northern and southern section, these pristine blue and green flooded forests and marshlands are the largest tropical wetlands in the world, extending into neighbouring Bolivia to the west and Paraguay to the south. There is an abundance of wildlife here including the endangered hyacinth macaw, capybara, caiman, anaconda, marsh deer, giant river otter and various monkey species. The elusive jaguar is found mainly in the northern Pantanal along the banks of the Cuiaba River and its tributaries, near Porto Jofre. The best time for jaguar tours is during the dry winter months (July to October), when the ground water levels have dropped and the jaguars come to the riverbanks to drink. Whilst hard to spot, there is a healthy population here. The bird life is also incredible, with specialist birding guides on request.
