Amazon & Manaus

One of Brazil’s most iconic regions, the Amazon is the largest tropical rainforest in the world and stretches across nine South American countries. Over half of the Amazon rainforest is located in Brazil with Manaus the main gateway for visitors. Manaus itself makes an interesting half-day tour and was once an important centre in the production of rubber. During the boom years an opera house was built to keep the European workers entertained and magical opera concerts are still performed today although not very frequently.

The Amazon is literally miles from anywhere and a minimum stay of 3-4 nights is necessary to make it worthwhile including a trip here. It’s a fascinating experience with over 10% of the world’s known species found in the rainforest. Lodges are dotted along the riverbanks and these are ideal for an all-round Amazon experience, but to see wildlife it’s better to head for the virgin rainforest further afield, away from the working river.

You need a keen guide in order to spot wildlife, as the vegetation in the Amazon is dense and make sure you take binoculars. Pink river dolphins are a highlight and unusually here they thrive in freshwater. You may also spot plenty of caiman and piranhas and the birding is excellent.

One of the highlights is to see the merging of the rivers at the confluence of the Rio Negro and the River Amazonas. The Rio Negro is black, coloured by the natural tannins in the water and the River Amazonas is more sandy coloured; there really is a distinct line between the rivers.

Another way of experiencing a Brazil Amazon holiday is by riverboat. Whether for a few days or up to a week’s trip, you can explore the smaller tributaries and creeks at a leisurely pace.
