South Africa
South Africa is renowned as a holiday destination and offers great value food and wine holidays, paired with stunning scenery. The beautiful city of Cape Town should be your starting point, as it combines marvellously with time exploring the wine routes of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek, which is the culinary capital of the country. Wines range from blockbuster reds to full bodied Chardonnay and crisp, refreshing Sauvignon Blanc. The university town of Stellenbosch has the Vine Hopper bus and Franschhoek has its iconic tram, providing east access to the vineyards. Wine tasting tours also depart from Cape Town daily. October to March is the ideal time to visit if you wish to escape the European winter, as this coincides with the Cape's warm summer.
Cape Town winelands holidays combine well with a self-drive or escorted small group tour along the scenic Garden Route. Safari holidays in South Africa are also world class, with many game reserves being malaria-free. You can also venture further afield and visit Victoria Falls, Botswana or Kenya, as all these countries are well connected by air.
Latin America
Argentina, Chile and Uruguay are the great wine producing countries of South America, offering fabulous food and wine holidays by combining their respective capital cities and wine producing regions. In Argentina most vineyards are found around Mendoza and in the Uco Valley, where the famous red Malbec wines are produced. High-altitude Torrontes whites are produced in Cafayete, in the northern Salta region.
In Chile most vineyards are within each reach of Santiago, with daily wine tasting tours. Chile is best know for its full blooded Carmenere wines, but a wide range of excellent whites are also produced. These two famous wine producing regions are separated only by the mighty Andes, so it is possible to take a scenic full day coach ride through the mountains if you wish to visit the winelands of both Argentina and Chile.
In Uruguay the wine states cluster around Carmelo, which is within easy reach of Buenos Aires by ferry, making it easy to combine this small country with Argentina. Elsewhere in Latin America Peru, Brazil and Mexico are all foodie hot spots, with distinctive local cuisines.
