When to go to Ecuador

Ecuador is situated on the equator and can be visited all year round, but the best time to visit Ecuador and Galapagos Islands will depend on what part of the country you wish to visit.

The best time to visit Quito and the Andean Highlands is from June to September (the dry season), but at high altitude the weather can be changeable, and it will be very cold at night.

December to May are the wetter months, with light afternoon showers, but many people chose to travel then as this is when the waters around the Galapagos Islands are warm and sea conditions are at their calmest and clearest. From August to October the waters can be very choppy, so if travelling during this period choose an itinerary that focuses on the more protected central islands around Santa Cruz, a larger boat and a lower cabin.

Diving is best from July to September.

Birding is always good, but best from July to September. The cloud forest has its highest rainfall from February to April.

The Amazon is wet and humid all year round. If taking a river cruise from Iquitos, the low water season is from June to November. The high water season, when walking opportunities are limited, is from December to May.
