Ecuador Holidays to Guayaquil + Flights from Quito + Galapagos Islands Cruise

With nearly 3 million people, Guayaquil is the largest city in Ecuador and country's main port. With regular flights from Quito, this vibrantly redeveloped mini-city of only eight square miles is the gateway city for a Galapagos Islands cruise. It has a warm tropical climate and a waterside buzz.

On Ecuador holidays to Guayaquil, this rejuvenated city has many attractions to offer and one of the very best is the Simon Bolivar Malecon (esplanade). This one and a half mile waterfront walk has restaurants, entertainment, sports, science & history museums, art galleries and fine gardens on display, showcasing the very best of Ecuadorian coastal plants. There are also monuments to the country’s heroes and artists, as well as the old market, built in 1907 by Gustave Eiffel of Eiffel Tower fame.

The House of Culture (Casa de la Cultura) has the most valuable collection of pre-Inca indigenous gold artefacts in Ecuador, with snake-shaped bracelets, ceremonial masks, earrings, nose pins and much more. The Piazza Lagos is a stylish complex of restaurants, wine bars and outdoor cafes spread amongst palm trees and fountains, and is the perfect spot to relax after a day of sightseeing. On the city's outskirts you will find the enormous Parque Historico Guayaquil which showcases the 20th century development of this fascinating city and also contains a zoo for endangered wildlife. You will also find lots of local handicrafts here.

Ecuador holidays to Guayaquil are usually combined with flights from Quito prior to a Galapagos Islands cruise. You can also enjoy an overland tour from Quito, travelling through the scenic Avenue of the Volcanoes - two parallel chains of mountains that include eight of the country’s ten highest peaks, with the Pan American Highway running through it.

More information on Ecuador holidays to Guayaquil, flights from Quito & Galapagos Islands cruise:

The Pacific coast extends northwards from Guayaquil for some 400 miles to Esmaraldes, near the Columbian border. These wide, fertile alluvial plains were first settled over 5,000 years ago by some of the oldest civilisations on the continent and have been a centre of agriculture ever since.

You can start from Salinas to the west of Guayaquil, the city’s favourite seaside resort that is named after the salt extracted here. There is a small but comprehensive Naval Archaeological Museum displaying antique sea-going balsa boats. The Lovers of Sumpa Museum is nearby, named after the 5,000 year old skeletons of a man and woman buried lovingly together. This is definitely one for the romantics among you on Ecuador holidays to Guayaquil.

Further north the coast is less developed and fewer tourists make the road trip up to Puerto Lopez, from where day boats leave to reach Isla de la Plata. This untouched island is often described as the ‘Poor Man’s Galapagos’ as blue-footed boobies, albatross and frigatebirds can all be seen here in season.

This coast is also one of the world’s best whale watching locations on Ecuador holidays to Guayaquil, as humpback whales travel up from Antarctica between June and October each year to mate and give birth around Machalilla National Park.
