Paraty & Emerald Coast

The coastline around the Portuguese colonial town of Paraty, about three hours drive south of Rio, is another great option for a Brazil beach holiday. We’d suggest staying in a local pousada here for a couple of days, or for longer in a luxury villa. Also known as the Costa Verde or Emerald Coast, Paraty is surrounded by ancient Atlantic rainforest, which makes for a pleasant drive after the hustle and bustle of the city.

Paraty itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with cobbled streets, traditional brightly coloured houses and pousadas, a picturesque harbour and small shops. It really comes alive during the annual Paraty Literature Festival. From the harbour it is easy to arrange boat trips to explore the verdant rainforest, find a remote beach complete with beach shack, go snorkelling, canoeing or even stand-up paddle boarding.

Further south, Florianopolis is a short flight away from Rio in the state of Santa Catarina and about an hour’s drive from Florianopolis the vast beach of Praia do Rosa is one of the most beautiful in the area. Almost anything is possible here as activities range from yoga, riding, running and surfing to whale watching in season. As the seas cool from June to November Southern Right whales can be seen on their migration and they return to the bays of Santa Catarina to calve and breed.
