Arequipa is a charming city, which is easy to explore on foot. It has colonial architecture and is surrounded by a ring of volcanic peaks that include the famous El Misti. The views here are mesmeric. Arequipa is known as the White City because of the beautiful volcanic Silar stone that many of the colonial buildings are carved from, but also the City of Eternal Spring because of its clement weather.
There is a fascinating convent here – Santa Catalina - that was first built in 1579 and should not be missed, as well as an interesting regional museum packed full of Inca artifacts. Sometimes Juanita, a well-preserved mummy of a young Inca girl that was found on a nearby volcanic slope, is also on show in the museum.
Arequipa is a great spot to acclimatise before exploring the higher altitudes of the Colca Canyon and Lake Titicaca. The picturesque journey to the Colca Canyon travels through agricultural land where you will see herds of vicuna. The old Inca terracing is still used for growing crops today. The main highlight here is the early morning trip to the Cruz del Condor, with its lookout point, where the majestic condors rise high on the thermals from their nests in the craggy ravine below. It really is a spectacle of beauty and such a peaceful moment.
