Guanacaste & Nicoya Peninsula

Located in the north of the country on the Pacific side of the continental divide, Guanacaste is known for its luxury beach hotels and dry tropical climate.  The airport at Liberia, the regional capital, makes this an easy destination to reach for those looking for sunshine and surf. Once annexed to Nicaragua this region retains its own distinctive feel. From the Gulf of Papagayo south towards the Nicoya Peninsula the coastal villages have rapidly developed. There are many top-end resorts, air-conditioned hotels and villas to choose from, with the town of Tamarindo a centre for nightlife and marine activities such as sport fishing and scuba diving.

To the east of the province the Guanacaste Mountains are home to an active volcano – Rincón de la Vieja - and a number of national parks. The volcano is over 6,000 ft and the Rincon de la Vieja National Park protects some of the last dry forest in the region. Visitors can hike to waterfalls as well as seek out the hot springs and bubbling volcanic mud pools on the volcano slopes.
