Bhutan Guided Tours, Holidays, Packages & Flights - with India & Nepal extension (tailor made)
Bhutan is an enchanting mountain kingdom perched high on the eastern rim of the spectacular Himalayas, which famously measures its 'Gross National Happiness' index each year. With Tibet to the north and India to the south, this 'Land of the Thunder Dragon' is the last bastion of Mahayana Buddhism with chanting red-robed monks, sacred monasteries that sit precariously on sheer cliffs and fluttering prayer flags that line the high ridges.
Bhutan has many magnificent fortresses ('dzongs') and monasteries. These include Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest) which clings to cliffs above the forested Paro Valley and is Bhutan's most iconic site. If you hike up its many steps, you will be rewarded with stunning panoramas over the valley below. Tashichho Dzong is a massive monastery and fortress on the northern edge of the capital, Thimphu, and is the seat of Bhutan's government. Punakha Dzong is a 17th century fortress set in a pristine valley, whilst exquisite Gangtey Monastery is situated in the scenic Phobjikha Valley. Chimi Lhakhang monastery is dedicated to the divine madman, Lama Drukpa Kunley. It is also known as the Fertility Temple, as it is a place of pilgrimage for childless couples.
Approximately the size of Switzerland, this small country has the highest proportion of protected land in all of Asia. With its ancient traditions and dramatic landscapes that range from subtropical plains to steep mountains and valleys, Bhutan is a perfect place to relax, enjoy nature and rejuvenate. Trekking is popular, whatever your level of ability, and Bhutan is a wonderful destination for a birding holiday.
A highlight of Bhutan guided tours & holidays is mixing with the locals at a ‘tshechu’. These exuberant festivals take place throughout the year and last for several days, with colourful masked performers doing elaborate dances in the dzongs. Archery contests also take place, as this is the national sport. Many people plan their visit to Bhutan to coincide with one of these festivals.
With its policy of low-impact, high-value tourism, only a restricted number of visitors are permitted to enter Bhutan each year. Most accommodation is cozy and comfortable, but there are also a handful of enchanting luxury mountain retreats. 'Tshechu’ are exuberant festivals that take place throughout the year, with masked dancers performing elaborate dances within the dzongs (fortresses). Archery competitions are popular, with bowmen representing their towns and villages in Bhutan’s national sport. And there are also festivals to celebrate natural events, such as the arrival of Black-Necked cranes in the Phobjikha Valley each winter.
Whatever your ability level, there are many satisfying treks available across Bhutan. Multi-day journeys can be as simple or grand as you prefer, whether you want to simply walk, or be accompanied by specialist guides, camp staff and horsemen to carry your equipment. In the High Himalayas, peaks such as Jomolhari (7,326m) are popular for very serious trekkers.
