The oldest town in Uruguay, Colonia was founded by the Portuguese in 1610 but the Spanish finally took control in 1777. It is set around a sleepy harbour and is also served by ferries from Buenos Aires, which is just 45 minutes away. The Barrio Historico (Historic Quarter) is surrounded on three sides by water, with incredible sunsets! One of the finest attractions in Montevideo is the National History Museum, housed in five buildings in the Old City. MAPI, the Museum of Pre-Columbian Indigenous Art is another must-see for lovers of local history and ancient culture, whilst the Mercado del Puerto is the place to try traditional grilled meat and a wine cocktail.
