Day 1
Arrive at Lilongwe Airport where you will be met by your birding guide and transferred 2-hours to Dzalanyama Forest Reserve.

Check in to your accommodation in this expansive woodland.that offers some of the best birding in Malawi.

In the afternoon enjoy exploring the forest with your guide, in search of local Malawian species.
Day 2
This morning enjoy birding on foot with your birding guide in Dzalanyama Forest Reserve - Malawi's premier Miombo woodlands.

Situated on the border with Mozambique and covering an impressive 382 square miles (990 sq km) of lofty peaks that overlook both Malawi and Mozambique, altitudes range from 3,600 to 5400 ft (1,100 to 1,650 m). You will also find dams, waterfalls and streams that attract the abundant bidlife. Here you can hope to see species such as the Olive-headed weaver, Boulder chat, White-tailed flycatcher, Black-eared seedeater, Miombo pied barbet and Stierlings woodpecker, amongst many others.

After resting in the heat of the day, in the afternoon enjoy another birding walk with your guide.
Day 3
Today we drive 5-hour drive northwards towards Luwawa Forest. This scenic drive takes us most of the day, as we enjoy birding along the way.

Our first stop is in Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary, a patch of woodland that is home to an interestibng variety of species. Here we hope to find the Pied mannakin, African finfoot, Red-throated twinspot, Olive sunbird and Schalow's turaco.

We continue towards Luwawa, which is located in the Viphya Mountains and offers a blend of plantations and local forests, along with expansive dambo (shallow wetlands). This makes it an ideal habitat for widows, whydah birds and sunbirds.
Day 4
We make an early start today for the long 8-hour drive northwards to the Nyika Plateau, travelling on a combination of tarmac and quite challenging dirt roads.

The Nyika Plateau is one of Malawi's most scenic areas offering brachystegia woodland, marsh, montane forest and huge rolling grasslands at altitudes of up to 10,000 ft (3,000 m). The climate here is cool throughout the year, due to the high altitude.
Days 5 To 6
Today is devoted to birding and game viewing on the Nyika Plateau.

Wildlife to be seen includes eland, zebra, reedbuck, roan antelope, hyena, leopard, serval and bushbuck.

There are also a host of birding specials including the Pink-breasted turtle dove, Augur buzzard and Red-winged francolin. You can also hope to see Fulleborn's black boubou, Red and yellow tufted malachite sunbird, Mountain marsh whydah, Mountain cisticola, Mountain nightjar and Bar-tailed trogon, as well as Placid, Grey-headed, Olive, Yellow-bellied, Stripe-cheeked and Olive-breasted mountain bulbuls.
Day 7
Today we leave the Nyika Plateau and head southwest towards the shores of Lake Malawi.

This scenic drive takes most of the day, with several birding stops en route. In particular, we search for Gunning’s akalat in remnant rainforest patches along the lake.
Day 8
Today we enjoy excellent birding along the shores of beautiful Lake Malawi.

Species we will look for include the Blue-spotted dove, Moustached warbler and Pennant-winged nightjar.
Day 9
We continue driving southwards today for 4-hours along the shores of Lake Malawi, with plenty of birding opportunites en route.

The area around Salima has some wonderful dambo birding, which is particularly good in the late summer when water levels are low. This could produce the Rufous-bellied heron, Red-winged pratincole, Marsh tchagra and Pygmy goose, as well as a host of other waterbirds.
Day 10
Continuing south, today we drive 5-hours to Liwonde National Park, situated on the plains of the Upper Shire River.

We drive through Liwonde town and along the lakeshore road to Ulongwe, continuing along a dirt road to the park. On arrival we sign in with a ranger, who will radio for a boat to collect us for the 15-minute ride up the Shire River, where we should see hippo, crocodile, elephant and buffalo. We arrive at our lodge in time for a late lunch and in the afternoon you can relax and enjoy the wonderful birdlife.

The lodge is set on the banks of a lagoon, adjoining the Shire River, and has a variety of habitats: open water, marsh, riverine and mopane forest, and open floodplain.
Days 11 To 12
Birding in Liwonde National Park centres around the Shire River, with shared game viewing by boat and on land.

Liwonde is one of the top birding sites in Malawi, with over 400 recorded species. Specials include the Green coucal, Bat hawk, Palm-nut vulture, Pel's fishing owl, Brown-breasted barbet, Livingstone's flycatcher, White-backed night heron, Lilian’s lovebird, and Böhm's bee-eater. You can also hope to see Pied kingfisher, Black heron and other waterbirds during boat rides on the river, as well as Red-necked falcon and Rufous-bellied heron. In the woodlands you can see some localised species such as the African openbill and Long-toed lapwing. Liwonde is also great for birds of prey such as the Bateleur, Martial eagle and Snake eagle.

There is also a variety of game in this park and you should get good sightings of elephant, sable antelope, warthog, impala, kudu, waterbuck, buffalo and many other species. As there are no lions in Liwonde, you can substitute a walking safari, bike ride or canoeing down the river for one of your game activities. For an extra free there is the option of rhino tracking - a 3-hour guided walk into rhino territory with armed scouts and guides to see the valuable work they are doing to combat poaching, ending with a delicious bush meal.

Note: Your game drives will be shared and will focus mainly on the general wildlife, but do make your guide aware that you are a birder and ask him to also focus on birds.
Day 13
This morning we drive 3-hours to the town of Zomba in the pleasantly cool foothills of Zomba Mountain.

The area has some interesting forest patches and highland streams, so whilst birding in the late afternoon we hope to find the White-winged apalis, White-eared barbet, Long-tailed forest scrub warbler and Augur buzzard, amongst others.
Day 14
This morning we have a leisurely 3-hours drive to the tea region of Thyolo (pronounced "Cho’lo"), with birding en route.

Situated in the foothills of Mount Mulanje, these tea estates have been cultivated for over 100 years. Check in and relax at your hotel, where the trimmed tea bushes give the appearance of a neatly kept but vast garden, with birding opportunities all around.
Day 15
Thyolo is conveniently located to access several remnant riparian forest patches, where we will seek out specials such as the White-winged apalis, Green-headed oriole, Thyolo alethe and Green barbet.

Depending on which species we are still looking for, we may include a day trip to the forested foothills of Mulanje mountain or some of the hills surrounding Blantyre. The Silvery-cheeked hornbill and Bar-tailed trogon would be amongst our target species.
Day 16
Transfer 1.5-hours to Blantyre Airport for your flight home.
