You will be met at Johannesburg Airport and transferred to your hotel in this thriving city.

Day 2
Today we recommend an optional full day shared tour to Soweto, starting with a visit to the Apartheid Museum, a living memorial to racial segregation.

We then continue to Soweto. With a population of well over one-million people, this sprawling township was made famous by the apartheid laws. We drive past the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, the largest hospital in the southern hemisphere and down Vilikazi Street, which was once home to two Nobel Peace laureates - Archbishop Desmond Tutu and President Nelson Mandela. Here there is the option of visiting Mandela's house, which is now a small museum (pay entrance fee locally).

Lunch is for your own account today, before we return to Johannesburg in the late afternoon.

Note: The Apartheid Museum is only open Wednesday to Sunday.
Day 3
Transfer to Johannesburg Airport for your onward flight.

You will be met at St Helena Airport and transferred to your hotel in Jamestown, passing through a few small villages along the way.

St Helena is an isolated sub-tropical island situated in the middle of the southern Atlantic Ocean and is famous as the place to which Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled from 1815 until his death in 1821. A British Overseas Territory, its volcanic nature is immediately apparent in the rugged coastal scenery.

After checking in to your hotel, enjoy a walking tour of Jamestown to learn more about the island and its people. Visit the castle with its tropical gardens, St James Church (the oldest Anglican church in the southern hemisphere), the famous Jacob’s ladder which ascends 699 steps above the town and the Court House.

Note: On arrival you will need to pay £20 per person airport tax, payable strictly in cash. Proof of medical insurance must also be provided.
Day 4
Today enjoy a full day private orientation tour of the island, travelling in a 4x4 vehicle.

Our first stop is at Deadwood Plain, which was the camp site of the Boer prisoners of war during the Anglo Boer War of 1900 to 1902. We then take a short walk to Flagg Staff, for wonderful panoramic views across the island. We also visit Fisher’s Valley, where Napoleon rode his horse during his exile on the island and Levelwood, home to the Bell Stone – a rock which when struck rings like a bell.

We then wind our way to the most southwesterly point of the island for incredible views over the Atlantic Ocean, which stretches unbroken for nearly 1,700 miles (2,700 km) in every direction. Enjoy sundowners as the sun sets, before returning to Jamestown. A picnic lunch is included today.
Day 5
This morning transfer to the harbour for a thrilling Ocean Safari to see dolphina, turtles, rays and other sea life.

St Helena Island is home to huge schools of pantropical dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and rough-toothed dolphins. These deep blue waters are teeming with marine life and you can also hope to see turtles, devil rays and whale sharks in season (January to March). You will also have scenic views of St Helena’s coastline and can view a few of the old fortifications and outposts that still stand.

After returning to port, the rest of your day is at leisure. However there is the option of arranging a snorkelling excursion with your skipper this afternoon (pay locally).
Day 6
Set off this morning on a full day private tour to spectacular Sandy Bay Beach.

Along the way we stop at St Helena Coffee Plantation to learn more about the production of this popular beverage.

We then continue along the coastline to Sandy Bay Beach. This bay isn’t sandy at all, but is dramatically beautiful with its jagged cliffs. Here we enjoy a picnic lunch on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

On our way back to Jamestown we stop at the Governor’s residence, Plantation House, for a private tour. Built in 1792, it has always been home to the island’s governors. Perhaps an even more famous inhabitant however is Jonathan the giant tortoise, who is 184 years old and lives on the grounds. It is believed that he is the world’s oldest living animal. We also visit St Paul’s Cathedral and Knoll Fort, before returning to your hotel.
Day 7
At leisure to relax or explore more of the sub-tropical island of St Helena. Despite its small size, the island has a huge amount to offer in terms of outstanding scenery, pristine marine waters and a mountainous terrain with a micro-climate that has created an astounding diversity of flora.

You can visit the Museum of St Helena, which traces the history of the island and contains artefacts from the numerous of shipwrecks that have occurred along the coastline over the past 500 years.

This evening dinner has been arranged with a local family to taste their cuisine and learn more about island life.
Day 8
Today enjoy a full day private excursion to the cloud forest of Diana's Peak, the island’s only national park where you can view many endemic plants and invertebrates.

If you are relatively fit, you can hike for 2 to 3-hours up to the highest point on the island - Diana's Peak at 2,700 ft (823 m), an ascent of 595 ft (175 m). You will be driven to Cabbage Tree Road to start your walk up the high central ridge. On a clear day you can enjoy breathtaking views and you can enjoy a picnic lunch on the peak.

In the afternoon we stop at Farm Lodge for tea. Built in approximately 1670 as an East India Company planters house, it is set in 10 acres of lush tropical gardens and lawns and has entertaining hosts.
Day 9
Napolean Bonaparte was exiled to St Helena in 1815 and died on the island 6 years later.

This morning we visit Longwood House, owned by the French government, where he lived and died. It is one of the best Napoleonic museums in the world, with original furniture and over 900 artefacts. Have a picnic lunch on Longwood Green and afterwards walk 15-minutes to the Valley of the Tomb to view Napoleon’s original burial place (he was subsequently re-buried in Paris) and a beautiful heart shaped waterfall.

In the afternoon we visit St Helena Distillery which produces the island's gin , brandy and mountain mist (a coffee liqueur). You may also be able to sample 'tungi', made locally from the prickly pear cactus.
Day 10
Transfer to St Helena Airport for your onward flight.

You will be met at Johannesburg Airport and transferred to your airport hotel.

Check in and relax under warm blue South African skies in the city of gold.
Day 11
Make your own way by free hotel shuttle or on foot (depending on location of your hotel) to Johannesburg Airport for your onward flight.

You will be met at Cape Town Airport and transferred to your hotel in this beautiful city, within sight of Table Mountain.

Check in and relax in your magnificent surroundings.
Day 12
Today is free for independent sightseeing in Cape Town.

To orientate yourself, use your pre-paid pass for the Red Route Hop-Off Bus, which stops at all Cape Town’s key sights and attractions, including the Table Mountain (a Fast Track cable car ticket is also included). Here you can ascend and enjoy one of the world's most famous views.

Continue to trendy Camps Bay beach and the many attractions of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.

Note: Don't let the colour of the bus confuse you. All buses are red, but they run two different routes - the Red City Route and the Blue Kirstenbosch Route.

Day 13
Today we recommend an optional full day shared tour to the beautiful Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, where you may see baboons, ostrich and perhaps even dolphins or whales in season (July/November).

Explore the historic university town of Stellenbosch and several wine estates on this famous wine route, which stretched from Paarl through to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Enjoy a cellar tour and some wine tasting, before returning to Cape Town in the late afternoon.
