Poás Volcano National Park is an hour and a half north of San Jose, reached by travelling along by a winding and scenic road. It is home to an 8,871 ft (2,704 m) active volcano, which last erupted in 2017. Because of this relatively recent eruption, on holidays in Costa Rica & birding tours to Poaz Volcano it is no longer possible to peer into its crater, which is over 1-mile (1.6 km) wide and over 1,000 ft (300 m) deep, making it the largest open volcano in the world. Instead you can view this magnificent volcano smoking from a distance - ideally early in the morning, before the clouds descend around midday. It is a spectacular sight.
The slopes of Poás Volcano are covered in cloud forest, which is home to an abundance of birdlife, including a wonderful variety of butterflies and hummingbirds. The surrounding area is therefore an essential stop on most Costa Rica birding tours. A little further east you will find Braulio Carrillo Park, one of the most extensive national parks in Costa Rica. Covering an area of over 44,099 hectares, it encompassing seven different habitats and is one of the most productive birding regions in all of Costa Rica.
