Costa Rica can be visited all year round as the two sides of this small country have opposite climates.
The high season is from November to April, when the weather on the drier Pacific Coast is at its best. Corcovado National Park and the west coast beaches should be avoided in September and October, when there are heavy rains along the Pacific coast.
The best time to visit the much wetter Caribbean Coast is from May to October (i.e. exactly the opposite). The Caribbean beaches can be visited all year round.
However this small country is situated on a narrow isthmus between two major oceans, so the weather can vary dramatically within one day and it can rain at any time of year.
The best time to see turtles nesting or hatching is at new moon from July to October (Caribbean coast) and June to December (Pacific coast).
The best time for birding is from December to March.
Whale watching on the Pacific coast can be done almost all year, as from mid-July until mid-October humpback whales travel up from Antarctica to breed, whilst from December to March northern hemisphere whales travel down from Alaska, although these are much harder to see.
