When to go to Zambia

Zambia has a hot sub-tropical climate, with good rainfall.

The best time to visit Zambia for game viewing is during the cooler months from May to October, as the bushveld is dry and animals must come to the rivers and waterholes to drink.

Victoria Falls has the greatest water flow from February to June, following the summer rains. The Zambian side of the falls dries up in October and November, when you need to cross to the Zimbabwean side for better views.

Birding is best in October, when thousands of carmine bee-eaters nest along the banks of the Luangwa River and from November to March (the hot, wet summer) as this is when the migrants visit. This is also the birthing season when the landscape is lush and green.
