Check in to your hotel conveniently situated near the airport.
Day 2
This morning your hire car will be dropped off at your San Jose hotel. Then drive 3.5-hours through beautiful Costa Rican mountain scenery towards the Arenal Volcano - one of the most active in Central America, with a perfect cone that on a clear day is visible from almost anywhere in the area.

Along the way you can make an optional stop at La Paz Waterfall Gardens (pay entrance fee locally). Here you can see a Butterfly House, toucans, scarlett macaws, hummingbirds and sloths in a nature park environment, as well as a series of waterfalls in a stunning rainforest.

After driving through the mountains on narrow roads, your route then crosses a large cattle and agricultural area, where chocolate is grown. Cacao was very important in the ancient Mayan and Aztec civilizations and today it is enjoyed throughout the world. Continue to La Fortuna, where you can relax surrounded by rainforests, waterfalls and thermal hot springs.
Day 3
This morning drive yourself to the Mistico Hanging Bridges to arrive in good time for your private tour departure time. This series of ten fixed and six suspension bridges is located in a natural corridor followed by migratory birds travelling between North and South America and offers wonderful views of the lake and volcano.

On this 2-mile (3-km) trail you can enjoy the great diversity of flora and fauna found inside this mountainous zone, as well as outstanding bird watching. Keep an eye out for howler monkeys, sloths, anteaters, coati, racoons and other rainforest wildlife. Birds you can hope to see include the Yellow-throated toucan, Crested guan, Grey-headed chachalaca, Baltimore oriole, Clay-coloured thrush and Red-throated ant tanager, amongst others.

Afterwards there is the option to relax at one of the many Hot Springs in the area (you can pay locally - but we strongly recommend booking in advance, as these do get fully booked in season).

Note: The hanging bridges trail is not suitable if you have a fear of heights. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring binoculars & rain gear. Also sun hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, swimwear and water shoes for the hot springs.
Day 4
This morning we recommend self-driving to the entrance to Arenal National Park for a 3-mile (5-km) self-guided walk along one of the trails around the base of the volcano.

Arenal Volcano rises to 5,250 ft (1,600 m) and towers over the village of La Fortuna. On the morning of 29 July 1968, after having been inactive for three thousand years, it erupted in the most spectacular way. The earth started shaking, clouds of ashes rose into the sky, women washing clothes by the river felt the water becoming hot, and lava started pouring down the side of the volcano.

You can walk along one of the trails through the rainforest, where you can see large lumps of sandy lava rock and view the many plants now growing here, as the rainforest has recovered. At the top of the trail, on a clear day you will have beautiful views over Lake Arenal. There is also a deck at the end of the trail, with postcard views of the volcano.

The afternoon is at leisure to relax at your lodge or explore the town. There is also the option of driving to La Fortuna Waterfall, which plunges down nearly 250 ft (75-m) from a cliff outside the town. Surrounded by lush foliage, the climb down to the waterfall is tough (500 steps) but the view once you get there will be worth the effort. At the bottom there is the opportunity to swim in the cold waters of the surge pool and shallow river at the bottom (pay entrance fee locally).

Note: Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring binoculars & rain gear. Also sun hat, sunscreen and insect repellent. Bring swimwear, towel and water shoes for the waterfall climb, which is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues.
Day 5
At leisure to explore more of the magnificent surroundings of La Fortuna (pay any entrance fees locally).

In 1968, the Arenal Volcano erupted after centuries of lying dormant, converting this quiet agricultural town into a hot spot for adventure travel. Many optional activities are available - including the Sky Tram & ziplines, the Hanging Bridges in the treetop canopy where you can search for rainforest wildlife such as sloths and monkeys, the La Fortuna waterfall and many walking trails around Arenal Volcano.

You can enjoy kayaking or paddle boarding on Lake Arenal, horse riding, mountain biking, ATV tours or a gentle cruise down the Penas Blanca River. If you are adventurous you can also try river tubing and waterfall canyoning, or venture into a world of stalactites, stalagmites and subterranean species on a visit to the Venado Caves. Alternatively you can simply relax at one of the many Hot Springs.

Day tours are also available to the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge, the rainforests of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, the turquoise waters of the Rio Celeste, or across the border into Nicaragua to view the Penas Blancas Massif.

In the evening you can enjoy an optional guided night trail in search of nocturnal wildlife.
Day 6
Today drive 4-hours from La Fortuna through the beautiful landscapes of northwestern Costa Rica to Rincon de la Vieja.

Situated in the scenic Guanacaste Mountain Range, this active cinder volcano rises 6,286 ft (1,916 m) above sea level and is surrounded by nearly 35,000 acres of national park. With volcanic steam vents, bubbling mud pots, hot springs and 32 rivers and streams, this is a fascinating region of geothermal activity.

On arrival you can drive to Rincon de la Vieja National Park and explore some of its trails..
Days 7 To 8
At leisure to enjoy waterfall hikes and walking in Rincon de la Vieja National Park - which means 'Old Woman's Corner'.

Optional activities include horse riding, mountain biking, abseiling, waterfall canyoning and tree top canopy tours in this spectacular scenery. Afterwards enjoy a mud bath in the thermal hot springs.
Day 9
Today we suggest the thrill of optional Waterfall Canyoning in Rincon de Vieja National Park.

After a safety briefing and instructions on how to rappell from professional guides, you will be assisted in putting on your helmet, harness and gear. Then enjoy 2.5-hours of adrenalin adventure, as you rappell down a stunning waterfall and experience a Tarzan pendulum swing. There will be a safety line controlled by a guide at the top of each rappel to stop you from falling if you let go of your rope, and another guide at the bottom controlling the main rappel line.

End with a swim in the pool at the bottom of the waterfall, before changing into dry clothes. A typical Costa Rican lunch is included, with fresh juice, coffee and biscuits.

Note: Wear quick drying and comfortable clothing, lightweight shorts and waterproof jacket. For footwear use trainers, slip-resistant water shoes with good grip, or hiking boots that can get soaked (flip-flops are not allowed). Also bring sunglasses, sunscreen, insects repellent, water bottle, GoPro or waterproof camera, towel and change of clothes.

This activity is not suitable for pregnant women, anyone with back problems, recent surgery. medical or heart problems.

Day 10
Today drive 2.5-hours to the small town of Tamarindo, located on the northwest coast of the beautiful Nicoya Peninsula.

Check into your hotel in this great surfing centre on the Pacific, with its lovely sandy beaches.
Day 11
At leisure to enjoy the splendid beaches of Tamarindo.

Many optional activities are on offer in this beach town - including sailing, tree-top ziplining, horse riding, golf, river tubing and sunset cruises. Surfing lessons are also available, as well as snorkelling and diving off the Catalinas Islands.

The mangrove-lined estuary of Tamarindo Wildlife Refuge protects animals such as howler monkeys and crocodiles and nearby Playa Grande beach, forming part of Las Baulas National Park, is a major nesting site for huge leatherback turtles.

Day 12
Today we suggest rising early and driving 35-minutes to Playa Flamingo for a morning of snorkelling in the warm clear waters around the Catalinas Islands - a sprinkling of 20 rocky islands in the Gulf of Papagayo.

Enter the water for two 40-minute sessions, following the rock formations and looking for angelfish, butterfly fish, various pufferfish, starfish, white-tipped reef sharks and schools of jacks and grunts.

The 'Cat' Islands are famous for their concentration of giant manta rays, some with wingspans up to 20 feet (6 m). The best time of year to see mantas is from November to May, when they are most common and visibility is at its best, with their numbers peaking between January and March.

From September to March you may also see humpback whales from the boat on your way to or from the islands. All equipment and snacks are included, but be aware that there can be strong currents.

Note: Ask your hotel for a boxed breakfast. Minimum 4 pax on the day.
Day 13
Enjoy another day relaxing on glorious Tamarindo Beach.
Day 14
Today drive 5-hours from Tamarindo travelling through the lovely scenery of central Costa Rica to San Jose.

Check into your hotel in a location convenient for the airport.
Day 15
Drive to San Jose Airport for your flight home.
