San Cristobal & Palenque

Chiapas is the southern-most state of Mexico, with a rich culture and history and at a third of the Chiapas population, the highest concentration of indigenous people in the country. These are mainly the Tzeltal and Tzotzil indians, descendants of the Maya civilisation of over a thousand years ago, who live in dozens of village communities in this beautiful highland valley. The Zapatista political movement is based here, with its policy of community development and democracy and strongly supports their welfare, economic survival and language.

Largely because of the region’s history and the highly indigenous population, San Cristobal de las Casas is considered to be the cultural capital of the state, although Tuxtla is the actual capital. San Christobal offers some lovely Spanish colonial architecture.

ALL OUR SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS HOLIDAYS ARE FINANCIALLY PROTECTED wherever in the world you live.
The city centre of San Cristobal de las Casas has maintained its Spanish colonial appearance, with narrow cobbled streets, ubiquitous wrought iron balconies with flowers, red clay tile roofs and markets. This has been a popular traveller’s destination for many years and visitors are well served by established tourist services, hotels and restaurants. But ancient customs and crafts survive and mix easily with the trappings of a modern dynamic city.

Not to be missed are the cathedral, the large open air craft market at the church of Santo Domingo and the Casa Na Bolum museum. This remarkable institution, established by archaeologist Franz Blom, combines a hotel, restaurant, museum and research centre dedicated to conserving the Lacondon jungle and the Lacondon Mayan people who still live there. Another must see for indigenous culture enthusiasts is the Museo de la Medicina Maya, which explains the ancient system of traditional medicine still used by the local Mayan descendants. Textile production has always been important here and Museo del Textil is a beautifully laid out presentation of this important local industry. Amber, ceramics and wrought iron are also staple products and readily available all over this highly traditional corner of Mexico.

Palenque is 80 miles northeast of San Cristobal and contains astonishing Maya ruins dated over a thousand year period since 226 BCE, with the civilisation at its greatest between 500 and 700. Even though only a fraction of this huge city has been recovered from the jungle, it attracts thousands of visitors annually and has become a world famous archaeological site. It contains some of the finest architecture, temples, pyramids, art, statues and carvings ever produced by the Maya. There is also a monumental palace measuring 97 by 73 metres which took four centuries to complete, including its own aqueduct water supply. The city was a highly successful, beautifully refined urban masterpiece and is an absolute must on San Cristobal & Palenque Holidays.

As a change from ruin-viewing you can sample the many waterfalls and ‘cascada’ in the area. Pride of place is taken by the Welib Ja Waterfalls, located in a beautiful park complete with stunning flora, walkways, zip lines into the water - and howler monkeys! The Mishol–Ha waterfall is close to the ruins and boasts a cave behind the falls. But take care – and your swim suit.
