Cancun, Riviera Maya & Tulum

Known as the Riviera Maya, the beaches along the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula are legendary. Stretching from Cancun in the north, through Playa Del Carmen to Tulum in the south, they offer miles and miles of glorious sandy beaches. The wonderful climate and warm turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea have encouraged large-scale development of all-inclusive hotels, but there are also many delightful boutique hotels set back from the beach, which gives you the opportunity to truly enjoy the local culture and cuisine.

The Mesoamerican Reef, the second longest in the world, offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving. Xplore Adventure Park offers some of the best zip-lines in the world, and the opportunity to swim and raft in crystal clear underground rivers, surrounded by spectacular stalagmites and stalactites. You can swim with dolphins or manatees at Xel-Ha natural water park, or enjoy a day of culture and fun at Xcaret theme park.

As this is the cradle of Mayan civilisation, a visit to one of the ancient ruins is a must.  Tulum is the closest, but the world famous ruins at Chichen Itza and Coba are also within reach as a day excursion.

Tulum boasts earlier structures than many sites, from the 13th century and they are located unusually, overlooking one of the best beaches in Mexico and clear Caribbean, jade coloured sea. It was an important Mayan trading port and it was heavily fortified on the vulnerable landward side with a tremendous, still surviving wall up to 5 metres high, 8 metres thick and 400 metres long. Buildings here include El Castillo, the castle, and the temples of the Frescoes and of the Descending God.

The Coba remains in contrast are buried deep in jungle and only partially excavated. As a result the site feels to be more authentic and you can hire a bike at the site and have fun exploring on your own. It is arranged around two lagoons and elevated pathways radiate in various directions to other sites. The longest is 62 miles long.

There are several pyramid temples and the highest in Yucatan, called Tzmoya, is 42 metres high. The view of the surrounding jungle from the top is well worth the climb, but you will need your hiking boots.

Cancun and nearby Riviera Maya combine plush hotels and stunning white sand beaches with downtown areas bursting with taco bars, jazz clubs and an energetic night life. With Acupulco, these are among the most popular coastal destinations in Mexico. There is truly something for everyone: water sports; golf, scuba diving access to Jacque Cousteau’s  Cave of the Sleepy Sharks, appearances by Mexico’s famous Ballet Folkloric - and bullfights. All this in a warm tropical climate, stunning surroundings and the best of modern amenities.

Twenty five minutes away by boat lays the beautiful Isla Mujeres, the Island of Women, who pilgrimaged her long ago seeking fertility. Here you can enjoy the contrasting, relaxed atmosphere and superb Mayan ruins. They discovered the island, were followed by the Spanish and then the Caribbean pirates, including the infamous Mundaca and Captain Lafitte. Walk the island and see the remains of their occupation here, or swim with dolphins, sail and scuba dive.

Cancun is also a convenient base for exploring the other local Caribbean islands, such as the quieter Isla Holbox, where flamingo, pelican, manta ray and whale shark watching are the must-do trips. Or the national park on Isla Contoy, a bird sanctuary which boasts a wealth of fascinating bird and plant life.

Visit the famous island of Cozumel, the largest of Mexico’s Caribbean islands, via the ferry at Playa del Carmen. The island is a paradise playground which caters for some of the world’s best reef scuba diving and snorkelling, windsurfing, solo exploring by car, motorbike and horseback, or just relaxing with some great shopping in the sun!  The ever present Maya are here too, in the shape of their buildings, the largest of which remain at San Gervasio. The island is covered with thick, verdant jungle and houses the famous ecological reserve at Punta Sun Park. Cenotes, deep natural water filled sink holes, which are accessible to experienced divers, add to the authentic atmosphere of this special place.
