The southern Amazon jungle is accessed from Puerto Maldonado, which is a short flight from Cusco. From here it’s a 1-hour bus ride to the river, followed by a boat ride of between 45-minutes and 3-hours, depending on the location of your jungle lodge – an adventure in itself! The whole experience is astounding, from the tropical heat to the sound of birdcall and the fragrant smell of damp vegetation. It is a nature-lovers paradise, staying in a jungle lodge open to the rainforest and exploring by boat or on foot. The birding and wildlife spotting opportunities on Amazon holidays & Peru birding tours are superb, including seeing caiman in the river and tapirs and macaws at clay licks (the clay contains important minerals that the birds cannot get from other sources). Much deeper into Tambopata National Reserve (another 3-hours by boat) there is a research centre with a particularly large clay lick.
Several specialist Peru birding tours travel from Cusco into Manu National Park. The accommodation here is much more rustic and there is quite a lot of overland travel, but this is where you can see the Cock-of-the-Rock - the fiery orange national bird of Peru, which has a colourful mating display.
Iquitos is the gateway to the northern Amazon, reached by flight from Lima, and is located on the mighty Amazon River itself. From here there is the opportunity to stay for a few nights on one of the riverboats and explore the southern tributaries looking for pink river dolphin and other wildlife. Smaller creeks are explored by dugout canoe. The beautiful and remote flooded forests of the Pacaya Samiria National Park are of particular interest. There are also a few jungle lodges around Iquitos.
