South of Lima is an amazing 800-mile coastline of desert and marine wildlife, so after exploring the capital head down the dry desert coast to the port city of Pisco, known for its grape brandy of the same name, and the fishing village of Paracas.
From here you can take a flight over the Nazca Lines. These mysterious ancient geoglyphs are best seen from the air, where it is easier to pick out their patterns which include geometric shapes, spiders, fish, lamas, monkeys and a hummingbird. Now a World Heritage Site, they are thought to have been created between 400 and 600 AD by the indigenous Nazca people.
For nature lovers, a boat trip to the marine rich Ballestas Islands in the Bay of Paracus is a must. These islands are home to thousands of sea lions and sea birds. You can hope to see Peruvian pelicans, boobies, albatross, guanay cormorant, Inca tern, oyster catcher and a wide variety of other species. If you are fortunate you may see Humboldt penguins and dolphins.
Afterwards try a Pisco sour - the national drink.
